Top Ten Fastest Animals on Land

#1: Cheetah

-It is now common knowledge that the cheetah is the fastest running animal on the planet. This cat reaches unmatched speeds of 70 MPH. It can easily accelerate from 0 to 68MPH in three seconds, which is faster than most supercars.

·         #2: Pronghorn Antelope [61 MPH]

-The Pronghorn Antelope’s speed is necessary in order to escape predators by outrunning them. This animal is able to run at high speeds longer than the cheetah due to the larger lungs and heart. They are not good jumpers either.

·         #3: Lion [50 MPH]

-Lions mostly uses their stealth and speed to catch their prey. Males are able to exceed 550lbs, making them the second largest living cat after the tiger. Wild lions are only able to be found in Asia, sub-Saharan Africa, and there is a small population in northwest India.

·          #4: Wildebeest [50 MPH]

-The Wildebeest is yet another animal that needs its speed to evade predators. They are the big cat’s favorite snack since they inhabit the plains and open woodlands in Africa.

·         #5: Thomson’s Gazelle [50 MPH]

-An interesting fact about these Gazelle is that they are named after the explorer Joseph Thompson. Their main enemy is the cheetah, which is hard to escape, but the Gazelle are able to sustain longer bursts than the cheetah. Allowing them a chance to live!

·         #6: Quarter Horse [47.5 MPH]

-The Quarter Horse’s name comes from its ability to out distance other horses in races of a “quarter mile” or less. This horse is also the most popular breed in the United States with about 5 million horses registered worldwide!

·         #7: Cape Hunting Dog [45 MPH]

-The Cape Hunting Dogs use their cunning abilities and speed, along with hunting in packs to focus on medium sized pretty such as the impala. However, sometimes these packs will decide to bring down zebras and wildebeests. The way they take an animal down is incredibly smart for an animal. They often start with a stampede towards the pack, then one dog will grab the victim’s tail, and another will grab the upper lip and then the rest of them will disembowel the animal which will leave it immobilized.
