01.BitDefender Antivirus Review
If you’re looking for absolute PC protection from viruses and more, you can’t go wrong with BitDefender Antivirus. Offering rock-solid security, simple usability, effective use of resources, and a valuable pricetag, BitDefender Antivirus 2010 is the best antivirus software solution we’ve seen. The 2010 edition builds on the already great program and adds some additional features that continue to improve overall PC performance and protection. As online threats continue to evolve and target different vulnerabilities, BitDefender has grown their arsenal and is utilizing the most up-to-date technologies to combat viruses and other malware. BitDefender Antivirus 2010 offers a robust set of features and utility, but is flexible enough to meet the needs of various users. Whether you’re an advanced user looking to control the whole process manually, or a novice looking for a set-and-forget solution, BitDefender delivers an easy to use security solution.
In short, BitDefender Antivirus 2010 provides protection and peace of mind, without upsetting your PC performance or paycheck.
For additional security (antispam, firewall, parental controls), consider upgrading to BitDefender Internet Security, or the complete super-suite BitDefender Total Security (includes PC tune-up tools, data backup, a file shredder and more).
Scope of Protection:
BitDefender Antivirus protects you and your PC from a number of online threats, including viruses, spyware, phishing scams, and more. The software basically covers you from every angle, protecting you from threats on the internet, email, and even instant messaging. BitDefender scans all web, IM, and email traffic for malware. The software is even equipped to encrypt your IM conversations.
BitDefender’s scanners run in real-time, but don’t require a lot of resources. In fact, the new optimized scans run 30% faster than last year (which were already fast), without significantly increasing system load and even reducing the boot time. One of the new features that further improves BitDefender protection and performance is the Active Virus Control, specifically designed to detect and demolish stealth threats. BitDefender has been using advanced heuristic detection already, but new malware have taken steps to avoid being analyzed by these technologies. Enter Active Virus Control; this proactive technology continually monitors all application activity, keeping an eye on file behaviors that look suspicious. One minor discrepancy won’t stop the file in question (thus avoiding false-positives), but if enough malware-like actions are detected, BitDefender Active Virus Control will lock it down.
Effectiveness:
Don’t let the inexpensive price and lesser-known name fool you; BitDefender Antivirus is powerful and completely effective. Independent industry research tests (ICSA labs, West Coast Labs, Virus Bulletin VB 100% certification, AV-Comparatives) agree that BitDefender is an effective solution, and one of the best overall performers. BitDefender has garnered several certifications and awards over the years, and Antivirus 2010 continues the legacy.
Ease of Installation:
BitDefender Antivirus installation is extremely simple and pretty intuitive. Whether you’ve purchased a box copy or are installing the software from an electronic download, the process is straightforward and easy. After a few quick downloads and a few approvals, you’ll be up and running (or letting BitDefender work automatically for you if you desire) in no time.
For the most effective protection, BitDefender removes other antivirus software you may have running that could potentially interfere. As part of the installation process you will choose from three user profiles, or user levels. But don’t worry if you change your mind (or simply want to see the unique interface layout associate with each). You can easily change what mode you’re in by accessing the settings menu.
Ease of Use:
BitDefender Antivirus 2010 is certainly easy to use. This year BitDefender adds user profiles, allowing the end user to choose the level of control they want from the program, and choosing from three distinct interface choices specifically designed to accommodate their specific needs and activities. You can choose from novice, intermediate, or advanced.
The novice mode is perfect for anyone who simply wants to install security software, forget about it, and never have to worry about being completely protected. While the beginner will be given access to some basic features, most of the advanced settings are pre-set for optimum security, allowing the user to let BitDefender do all the “hard work” for them. Computer security couldn’t be easier. The intermediate user interface definitely has more options and utility, but is effectively organized and easy to use. The intuitive tab interface makes it completely easy to navigate, and includes a simple dashboard and access to each of the major utilities.
The advanced expert interface gives the user complete access to all the tools and features, and while it’s more complex, it is just as intuitively organized and easy to navigate.
Features:
BitDefender Antivirus has a complete lineup of all the essential features (and then some). The antivirus software is equipped to protect your computer from a number of threats, and provides complete peace of mind while downloading files online, opening emails, or sending an important IM.
Along with the Active Virus Control features, the 2010 edition of BitDefender includes advanced Intrusion Detection technology. BitDefender will warn you if it detects any direct code injection (DLL) attacks, and proactively detects and defends from malicious attempts to adjust your crucial registry entries or system files.Another advanced feature is one sure to please PC gamers. Bitdefender features a no-interruptions gamer mode that is ideal for stopping annoying notices or popups from interfering while you’re in the middle of some intense gaming (or a full-screen video, or presentation).
BitDefender 2010 is also equipped to run effectively on laptops, and features a special laptop mode designed to optimize battery life. (Of course you may also be interested in BitDefender Total Security for Mini-Notebooks, a comprehensive security/utilities/backup solution specifically designed to run well on netbooks)
Updates:
With today’s virtual world constantly being introduced to more (and more advanced) threats, antivirus software is only as good as its latest update. Timely updates to virus databases and definition files are crucial in keeping you protected. The main kernel-level antivirus protection of BitDefender depends on an up-to-date list of known virus signatures and matching code.
BitDefender Antivirus 2010 performs regular updates every hour (unless directed otherwise by the user). BitDefender is setup to run these crucial updates automatically, and they are run in the background. You don’t have to worry about manually updating (though you can if you want), and more importantly, you don’t have to worry about updates slowing down your system.Furthermore, you don’t have to worry about updates causing problems or losing program files. If file damage does occur (rare), BitDefender is setup to automatically repair itself with the newest working update.
Help & Support:
BitDefender is amazingly easy to use, and does most of the work for you so you don’t have to tweak it and constantly interact with the program (read: there are fewer annoying popups than other software). But if you need additional assistance or product support, you don’t have to go very far.
BitDefender 2010 now has in-product technical support, providing answers to some of the most common questions. The self-service module also gives you the ability to contact the technical support team directly from the product itself.Softwin, the manufacturer of BitDefender offers a robust set of helpful resources online, and free 24/7 support. You can access the BitDefender security support team via phone, email, or even online chat.
Summary:
BitDefender Antivirus 2010 is certainly one of the best security software solutions available, combining powerful features and excellent protection in an easy to use program. The software is effective, simple, and impressively priced.
Overall, you can’t go wrong with BitDefender Antivirus 2010 when it comes to virus protection, versatility, and value. For superior performance, protection, and price, we recommend BitDefender Antivirus 2010.Alternatively, you may be interested in BitDefender Internet Security for additional protection with antispam and a firewall. Or you might look into BitDefender Total Security, the all-in-one premium suite that includes security, parental controls,
tune-up utilities, and online backup.
02.Kaspersky Anti-Virus Review
Kaspersky Labs has established quite the name in security software, and Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2010 continues to verify their reputation. The antivirus software solution is certainly one of the best available.
Like so many of the other antivirus packages including BitDefender, Kaspersky Anti-Virus is a complete antivirus solution with real-time protection from a number of threats, including viruses, Trojans, bots, worms, and even spyware. The software is more than equipped for comprehensive security, and has some nice new features this year to help combat new threats.
Kaspersky also offers a 3-user license option (for 1 year), so it’s actually a very cost-effective way to protect all of your home computers.
If you're looking for antivirus protection for small business, you might be interested in Kaspersky Anti-Virus for File Server or Kaspersky Business Space Security, one of the best small business antivirus software suites available.
Scope of Protection:
Kaspersky Anti-Virus protects your computer from all angles, guarding against viruses, trojans, worms, spyware, and rootkits. The impressive arsenal also keeps your computer safe from exploits (OS and browser), keyloggers, dialers, adware, malicious scripts, and more. Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2010 offers full web protection; the Kaspersky URL Advisor gives you a whole new level of protection online. The plug-in works with your browser (Firefox and/or IE) and provides integrated warnings and advanced protection while you surf.
Of course the upgraded Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 covers more ground, but for desktop antivirus software, Kaspersky Anti-Virus is as all-encompassing as they come.Effectiveness:
Kaspersky has historically been one of the most effective antivirus software around, often among the first to detect (and protect from) new viruses in the wild. The software continues to take advantage of the large user-base with their Kaspersky Security Network. This community approach basically lets each user (who opts in) to act as a lookout for the others. If Kaspersky gathers (anonymous) information from your computer about a new virus, they can find the cure and deliver it to everyone quickly.
Kaspersky Anti-Virus doesn’t just find and remove malware, but also keeps an eye on potential security threats. The integrated vulnerability scan checks for system and application issues that should be addressed to reduce/eliminate vulnerabilities.Ease of Installation:
Kaspersky is super easy to install by following the traditional setup wizard to perform a suggested or custom install. The software is available as a box copy (you can also purchase the BackUp CD), or you can download and install the software immediately. Kaspersky protects your computer from the get-go, from a number of threats with antivirus for your files, system, web and even IM. Kaspersky blocks viruses and spyware in real-time, and includes advanced white-listing and other application controls for any application you open.
In fact, Kaspersky also has a Gamer mode that can be deployed for uninterrupted play. Now when you’re in the middle of a full-screen frag-fest (or raid as may be the case) you won’t be frustratingly interrupted with random popups or security alerts.Ease of Use:
Kaspersky Anti-Virus is quite simple to use, with an easy interface and user-friendly navigation. The software is effectively organized for intuitive use, and features a simple color-coded graphic so you always know your security status (the traffic-light color-coded security status is actually big enough that “at-a-glance” is an understatement; more like “can’t miss it”).
The dashboard features simple left nav tabs and easy access to the quarantine, reports, and settings (where you’ll find the scheduler). The interface includes useful icons to identify the various components, and is effectively organized.Kaspersky Anti-Virus has traditionally been geared towards the expert user. And while the advanced tools and abilities are still there (even allowing advanced users to perform scans at the command-line if they want), the security software is definitely showing more of a consumer-level approach. The 2010 version of Kaspersky provides solid security, and should work well for both beginners and experts alike.
Features:
Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2010 has a full lineup of features, with all the essentials and then some. One unique feature is the virtual keyboard. While the efficacy is debated, the virtual keyboard lets you input text (passwords, social security numbers, bank information) by simply clicking on the “keyboard” with your mouse. While it’s no way to type an essay, the Kaspersky virtual keyboard does avoid key loggers and those trying to steal your info with keystroke recognition malware.
Advanced users will love the complete control over the antivirus software that they have. Kaspersky is a software-tweakers dream, with customizable controls for every component. And while experts can tweak a number of things, the slider controls and toggle buttons should be easy enough for anyone to use if they want to. With the various settings you can customize what Kaspersky scans, how deep it scans, and other tweaks for each individual scan and tool. The scan scheduler is located in the setting, and lets users decide exactly when and how often the various scans are performed. By default Kaspersky Anti-Virus is scheduled to perform scans (and updates) automatically. Two innovative technologies help keep the scans running quickly. iChecker scanning means that only files that have changed since your last scan will be scanned, improving scan
speed without affecting efficacy. iSwift technology automatically throttles the resource demand and adjusts scanning as needed, so if you’re not running any programs and the system is idle, Kaspersky works faster.
One new feature that will help ramp up security for everyday web browsing is the Kaspersky URL Advisor. This plug-in runs on your web browser (Internet Explorer and/or Firefox) and will help you stay away from malicious websites. If you accidentally stumble on a bad link, Kaspersky alerts you and blocks access. And the plug-in doesn’t install a new toolbar, so you probably won’t notice much change to your routine online browsing.
Updates:
Frequent updates are essential for effective antivirus and antispyware protection. Kaspersky Anti-Virus delivers updates on a regular basis, every hour, for continual security and to make sure that updates aren’t so big that they take forever to load. Updates are performed automatically, though you can also initiate a manual update at any time, from the software directly or from the Kaspersky notification icon in the system tray (lower right).
Another nice feature for those interested is the Virus Activity Review. This is a streamlined virus watch report (online, flash) that displays a number of interesting statistics and analysis on the current layout of viruses and other malware. With graphs and charts, it’s easy to get a glimpse into the world virus threat level and see how Kaspersky is staying up to date.Several of the antivirus software we reviewed includes the capability to revert or “rollback” to a previously working database if the most recent update caused any problems. Kaspersky has this feature, and it’s easy to find and deploy. Simply go the ‘Update Center’ tab on the dashboard and find the tool.
And if your computer completely crashes, you’ll be glad you created a rescue boot disk (from the Security+ tab). The rescue disk can easily be burned, and will contain a disk image (ISO file) that can run on bootup (before the operating system) and help you revive a dead PC.
Help & Support:
Kaspersky offers some great support for all of their products, including Anti-Virus. Technical support comes in the form of an online knowledge base (searchable), FAQs, product manuals and an active forum. Not only are these available from the Kaspersky website, but can be easily accessed from within the program itself.
Kaspersky Anti-Virus also includes context-sensitive help. So not only are the included help files complete, but they open to information that corresponds withwhere you are in the software. You can also submit a specific issue online, or connect with an operator through online live chat.
Summary:
Overall, Kaspersky Anti-virus 2010 continues to deliver superb protection and security. The antivirus software is robust, and integrates innovative technologies to defend from newer threats. As one of the best antivirus software we’ve reviewed, Kaspersky Anti-Virus is a great way to go for PC peace of mind.
03.Webroot AntiVirus with SpySweeper Review
Webroot AntiVirus with Spy Sweeper is the perfect virus/spyware combo. The software is easy to use, and features effective protection and performance. AntiVirus with Spy Sweeper combines all the right components to deliver one of the best antivirus software available.
Even everyday computer users need advanced protection from the prevalent computer threats. From viruses to rootkits, to malicious hacking tools and vulnerability exploits; a multi-layered approach is almost essential for everyday protection. Webroot’s antivirus/antispyware software has all the right features and more.
Scope of Protection:
Webroot AntiVirus with Spy Sweeper is a very comprehensive desktop antivirus package. The software protects from threats from several sources, and the several layers of protection keep your computer safe. Webroot protects PC’s from viruses
in all forms, as well as worms, Trojans, malware, and rootkits.
Webroot monitors and detects all sorts of malicious files and just plain unwanted programs like adware, dialers, cookies, and keyloggers. The integrated Spy Sweeper is an amazing standalone anti-spyware software that in itself protects from a variety of computer threats. in all forms, as well as worms, Trojans, malware, and rootkits.
The software is completely armed to not only detect, but effectively remove malicious files, even ending running processes and removing associated registry entries. Webroot’s defensive technologies help keep your information protected from hackers and identity thieves.
But more than just being on the defense, Webroot AntiVirus with Spy Sweeper also features proactive technology to find malware before it even has the chance to hit your computer. With today’s newest threats being designed to bypass traditional signature-based scanning, advanced protection is so important. Webroot’s “zero-hour” protection analyzes files for malicious behavior and other incriminating behavior, and blocks files that might prove to be a virus in disguise.
Effectiveness:
Webroot AntiVirus with Spy Sweeper revolves around 16 protective “shields” that cover your network, web browsing, Widows, startup programs, and email.
The web browser shields keep you safe online, blocking from Internet Explorer hijacks, exploits, and even unwanted browser “helper” objects. The email shield works for both emails you receive (Pop3 port 110) and messages you send (SMTP port 25), so you won’t accidentally forward along a threat to your friends, family, or coworkers. Webroot AntiVirus with Spy Sweeper is comprised of two powerful components (antivirus and antispyware, obviously). The desktop antivirus component is powered by business security experts Sophos. The antispyware element is managed by Webroot’s own Spy Sweeper.
Sophos’ antivirus protection is certainly up to par, earning several recent
Virus Bulletin VB 100% awards. These certify that the antivirus engine is completely capable of protecting from 100% of known in-the-wild viruses. The reactive and proactive rates were similarly impressive, finding 81.8% (significantly higher than almost all other antivirus software tested).
The software is also ICSA approved, and certified from the West Coast Labs as an effective solution for desktop antivirus, anti-trojan, anti-malware, and antispyware.
The antispyware software included is second to none. Webroot Spy Sweeper provides an impressively high level of protection from spyware and other identity-compromising malware. Combined with antispyware protection from Sophos, Webroot AntiVirus with Spy Sweeper is certainly effective.
Ease of Installation:
Webroot AntVirus with Spy Sweeper is easy to install and implement. In fact, the software walks you through some initial setup while you’re installing the software. While this does add a few minutes to the install process, it gives you control to setup the software exactly how you want it, and makes it so you can essentially leave the software completely unattended after.
The installation process introduces the WARN (Webroot Automated Research Network), the proactive network approach that (if you give permission), allows Webroot to gather anonymous information that helps them keep on top of new threats. Installation also lets users set when they’d like a weekly sweep to perform, and configure the online backup. Users can also take advantage of the Webroot partnership with Ask.com (or not), by installing the browser toolbar and setting Ask.com to be the default search engine.Ease of Use:
Webroot AntiVirus with Spy Sweeper features an intuitive interface and simple tools to accommodate any user level. The clean user interface is organized with tabs for simple navigation and quick access to all the major components of the software. Webroot’s scanning engine includes over 1.5 million (and constantly growing) virus definitions. After the sweep is finished, you can easily place the found threats in a quarantine area while you decide what to do with them.
The antivirus/antispyware scans (or “sweeps”) are straightforward. You can choose between a full sweep (complete and thorough scan of the whole computer) or aquick sweep (optimized to search the most commonly threatened files). The full sweep
scans all drives (including external media), the Windows registry, memory, compressed archive files, and executable programs.
Of course you can also set a custom sweep to scan exactly what you want. You can also easily set sweeps to run on a specific schedule.
The sweeps can run in the background while you use the computer for other tasks, and most of the common commands (start sweep, check for updates, turn on gamer mode) can be accessed directly from the windows taskbar notification area (bottom right).
You can also easily scan a single file from anywhere on your computer by simply right clicking on it and sending it the software to check for viruses.
Features:
Webroot AntiVirus with Spy Sweeper has several integrated features that add
security benefits as well as convenience. One nice feature is the included local and online backup. The software comes with 1GB of storage space for free, and additional storage space can be purchased separately. As the software is installing, Webroot automatically analyzes your files and lets you choose what to backup. You can securely backup files from your desktop, favorites, my documents or my pictures.
The backup solution is actually fairly robust, allowing you to not only securely store important files and restore them at a moment’s notice, but also lets you access them anywhere. Stop emailing files to yourself, and simply back them up online. You can even send a secure link in an email to friends/family to share files, and don’t have to worry about them getting access to any other files than the one(s) you send.security benefits as well as convenience. As the software is installing, Webroot automatically analyzes your files and lets you choose what to backup. You can securely backup files from your desktop, favorites, my documents or my pictures.
Another nice feature is the gamer mode. You can turn this feature on with the click
of a button, and it will let you enjoy full-screen computer games, videos, presentations and more without annoying interruptions from the software. And while this mode isn’t as secure as having the full system enabled, you don’t have to worry about forgetting to toggle back to full protection, the software will do it by default after 4 hours.
Updates:
Keeping your security up-to-date is easy with Webroot. The software is setup to automatically check for updates regularly (every hour if you want) and even initiates updates delivered immediately to your system if needs be, with Webroot’s VersionGuard technology.
And even better than constant updates, Webroot AntiVirus with Spy Sweeper includes real-time proactive protection, analyzing files and keeping an eye out for malicious behaviors that “tip-off” the software that the file is a virus.Help & Support:
Webroot’s antivirus software is very easy to use, but you can also get extra help if needed. In-program help is available, as well as additional resources online. Free phone support is available for on weekdays, or you can send a request via email at any time. The online support center also has product-specific user guides and a FAQs section. There is also a helpful video for product installation.
Premium support is also available for security optimization, virus removal, and even PC tune-ups, but cost extra (prices vary per type of assistance).Summary:

04.Norton AntiVirus Review
Norton AntiVirus 2010 is a very impressive security solution, offering a complete lineup of robust features and a whole new approach to online security. As one of the best antivirus software available, Norton AntiVirus continues to improve their software, and in turn- improve your security. With continued innovation and re-focus on overall consumer experience, the 2010 installment should keep Norton customers happy (and help the disgruntled nay-sayers reconsider).
Let’s face it, Symantec/Norton has been a huge player in the antivirus market, pioneering the software from the get-go. And with popularity comes extra critics. Norton has suffered with several complaints in years previous about software bloat and overzealous resource usage. Last year’s edition (2009) turned that complaint around, offering a speedy solution with a focus on efficient resource management. Norton AntiVirus 2010 remains an impressively lean and quick program, while
adding some compelling features specifically engineered to catch the most lethal viruses (the ones that aren’t found by traditional security signatures).
Norton AntiVirus 2010 does a great job of balancing system resources, simplicity, and (most importantly) security. The protection level is second to none, and new features continue to set the standard for antivirus software. Norton has managed to use their strengths to their advantage, and deliver an excellent antivirus software with a great overall user experience (whether you’re a security pro or you just need software that does the hard work for you). Long story short: Norton AntiVirus 2010 has several compelling features, the software works, works well, and doesn’t require you to seriously sacrifice resources.
Scope of Protection:
Traditional Signature Based Protection is the first line of defense. And while
other technologies are being developed to get the viruses that signatures can’t, fingerprinting and signature protection are still essential. Norton’s huge (and growing) database of known malware will keep your computer safe from threats. One of the best parts about AntiVirus 2010 is the Norton Insight technology. This feature allows Norton
to only scan the files that might be at risk, bypassing the trusted files and files that
haven’t changed, so the scans don’t waste time and run significantly quicker
(not to mention smarter), even getting quicker over time.
SONAR 2 is Norton’s second iteration of the advanced heuristic protection technology. SONAR stands for Symantec Online Network for Advanced Response, and takes a proactive approach to detecting malware by observing file behavior in real-time to monitor malware-like behaviors to stop viruses (that either manage to bypass other methods or are new enough that they haven’t been tagged as malware) before they have the chance to infect your computer.other technologies are being developed to get the viruses that signatures can’t, fingerprinting and signature protection are still essential. Norton’s huge (and growing) database of known malware will keep your computer safe from threats. One of the best parts about AntiVirus 2010 is the Norton Insight technology. haven’t changed, so the scans don’t waste time and run significantly quicker
(not to mention smarter), even getting quicker over time.
Traditional signatures and advanced heuristics are great (and Norton does a great job with them), but one thing that really sets Norton apart is their new technologies that are attempting to find that last 1% of viruses that are so new or tricky they can’t be caught by other methods. This unique and innovative approach is based on reputation scanning, and the two main features in this endeavor are Download Insight and Reputation Technology.
Reputation Technology is the new proactive security measure from Symantec. Basically, it involves a special algorithm to analyze files and determines their relative threat based on reputation, based on their source, digital signature, age, and popularity. This innovative new technology isn’t a specific tool or feature, it is an overall approach that works in conjunction with several Norton technologies to deliver a more balanced, efficient security solution.
Download Insight is specifically designed to stop new malware before you accidentally/mistakenly download it. Basically, Norton provides you with necessary information on any file (obtained from years of research and anonymous information provided by the Norton Community Watch) immediately when you attempt to download it, so you can make an informed decision. This happens in real-time, so
you don’t have to wait. The File Insight gives you access to a good deal of
information (number of users, reputation, where it came from), but if you don’t
want it you can configure the software to only show you when a risky file is found.
The only time a warning popup appears is if you’re attempting to download a file that hasn’t been deemed trustworthy yet. For example, let’s say you go to facebook
(but in actuality it is a fake malware trap) and are prompted to install a new
codec to view some video. If Download Insight warns you that the download
isn’t trusted and may be harmful, you might want to reconsider (after all, what are the chances that you’re the first to try and download this codec).
Effectiveness:
Norton AntiVirus is certainly effective at protecting your computer; now more-so than ever. AntiVirus 2010 is equipped to protect your computer from viruses, Trojans, worms, bots, spyware, rootkits, hackers, and other malware threats, whether they’re online or in emails or IM messages. The traditional virus detection method of matching signatures is robust, and constantly updated to protect your computer. Advanced heuristic detection has become the standard in antivirus software, and Norton does a good job of proactively analyzing files and their behavior to stop suspicious malware. But the new technology that directly addresses the newest threats is the reputation scanning.
Norton's antivirus software is effective, and professional testing organizations agree. Norton has been recognized as one of the most effective antivirus software available, and with their focus on speed and efficiency, they’re also rated among the fastest. Let’s just say that with the 2010 installment you certainly don’t have to choose between efficacy and efficiency; with Norton AntiVirus you get strength, speed, and security.Ease of Installation:
Norton AntiVirus has been designed to be fast and straightforward, and that starts from the second you download the program. Direct download of the software means that you don’t have to wait for the boxed copy to show up, and can install immediately. The whole installation process is straightforward and quick. In fact, Norton’s installation process actually abandons the traditional Microsoft Windows installer and uses their proprietary technology for an even quicker installation.
Ease of Use:
Norton AntiVirus 2010 is completely easy to use, and even easy to understand.
The straightforward interface is easy to navigate and makes it simple to get the most out of the program. The whole program is streamlined and intuitive, which makes it easy to get the most out of the software, even performing some advanced functions without professional know-how or techno gymnastics.
The software is actually quite flexible, and is quite capable of accommodating a variety of users. If you’re looking for a set-and-forget security solution, Norton AntiVirus is a great solution (you can set the software to run automatically and only require user input as a last resort). Of course the software is also robust enough to satisfy the security pros, and provides a wealth of stats and behind-the-scenes information to help experts completely control the software. The straightforward interface is easy to navigate and makes it simple to get the most out of the program. The whole program is streamlined and intuitive, which makes it easy to get the most out of the software, even performing some advanced functions without professional know-how or techno gymnastics.
One new feature that makes this behind-the-scenes control possible is the new System Insight. This feature allows you to flip the UI (with an impressive visual) to see the performance from the back end. This tool lets you monitor not just Norton’s impact, but your entire computer performance. You can see when you (or more likely the software) ran scans, found security threats, or downloaded/installed programs.
But you will also see detailed graphs and information that can help you see which programs are slowing down your PC the most. And even better, you can optimize the system to increase speed and overall performance (memory, applications, startup time) with a single-click optimization button. The graphs are informative in and of themselves, but you can also scroll over and/or click specific events and view additional details and information.
Features:
The 2010 edition of Norton AntiVirus is feature-filled, but not at the expense of sacrificing speed and performance. Each feature works towards the ultimate goal of complete PC protection.
One great feature is the additional vulnerability protection that Norton provides. Since so many security threats infiltrate through specific “holes” in applications, browsers or the OS, Norton proactively helps you stay on top of the most recent patches and security updates.Another really nice feature is the “Silent” gamer mode. When you’re in full screen mode (for a game, movie, or presentation), the last things you want are annoying popups or other programs to hog your PC resources. If you use the Silent Mode,
you don’t have to worry about either. Furthermore, Norton AntiVirus is setup with a Smart Scheduler to automatically delay routine scans to only perform when your
PC is idle (and you can adjust how long of idling is really “idle”).
If you’ve ever had a completely crashed computer, you know how important it is to have a bootable recovery disc available. Norton 2010 comes with a bootable recovery tool to effectively boot and fix a crashed PC.
Updates:
Norton updates are quick and easy (and don’t require you to do anything). Updates are delivered every 5 to 15 minutes. These Pulse Updates have two distinct advantages: they’re often enough that you’re always up to date with the most current patches, and they’re small enough that they deliver quickly and seamlessly, without any noticeable slowdown (or annoying announcement) for the user.
Of course you can also run a manual LiveUpdate at any time.Help & Support:
Norton products from Symantec have a number of outlets for getting additional help or product support, and Antivirus 2010 is especially loaded with resources since it’s one of their flagship consumer-level products. In-product help includes a thorough user’s manual, quick access to online help, and an innovative integrated auto-fix feature (self diagnoses and fixes common problems).
Online, you can find support in the forms of FAQs, tutorials, product comparisons, and a professional support center. You can get personalized help with problems running the software, or even assistance with viruses and malware removal. Help is available (and free) over the phone, email, or online live chat. There is also an active community of Norton users, and a variety of forums, blogs and additional resources that are available to get help or just more information on a number of security topics.

Eset Nod32 Antivirus is a great desktop security solution, complete with effective protection and advanced features. Eset Nod32 is particularly useful for home users looking for a simple “down-to-earth” security software that they can simply install and let the software do the work for them. Eset has proven to be one of the best overall performing antivirus software, and continues the trend with their most recent installment, Eset Nod32 Antivirus 4.
Scope of Protection:
Eset Nod32 Antivirus certainly isn’t as far-reaching as the upgraded Smart Security, but the scope is definitely on par with other leading antivirus competitors. Eset Nod32 is equipped with all the essential technologies and features to keep your PC protected from traditional threats (viruses, worms, Trojans, spyware, and even rootkits), but is also fully armed to completely protect you while you’re online. Eset works behind
the scenes to deliver protection from dialers, adware, and keyloggers.
Eset Nod32 integrates email protection to scan email (inbound and outbound) for viruses and other malware. The antivirus software also protects users from auto-running external media (like USB jump drives) by scanning files when the external medium is plugged in.the scenes to deliver protection from dialers, adware, and keyloggers.
Effectiveness:
While Eset Nod32 isn’t the most effective, the software is consistently near the top in independent antivirus tests. Eset certainly holds its own with competitors for efficacy and efficiency. In the recent test from Virus Bulletin, Eset performed right on par with most of the competitors for overall reactive and proactive antivirus scanning, and came away without any false positives.
The recent evaluation from AV Comparatives showed some false positives (12), but Eset still scored at the top of the class for overall detection rates (with an impressive 97.2%), and garnered an overall A+ (Advanced Plus), the highest rating from AV Comparatives.Ease of Installation:
Antivirus from Eset Nod32 is certainly easy to install and implement. The software is ready to run from the get-go. Setting up manual scans and scheduling specific scans is straightforward, or you can simply let Eset work in the background and take care of itself (and your computer) automatically.
Eset Nod32 Antivirus is equipped with the ability to create a bootable disc (or USB drive) in case of emergency. Working with the Microsoft Windows Automated Installation Kit, users will then be able to clean an infected or otherwise un-start-able computer.Ease of Use:
Eset Nod32 Antivirus is one of the easiest antivirus programs to use. The whole program is designed to accommodate beginners, and doesn’t require a lot of
tweaking and/or manual maintenance to keep running properly.
The user interface is simple, but completely straightforward. Users will have no problem navigating the program with the simple graphic user interface and logical setup. The default setup is for beginners, and the advanced mode adds some functionality without completely alienating standard home users.tweaking and/or manual maintenance to keep running properly.
Scheduling, report logging, and adjusting settings are all easy tasks. For the most part, Eset works on its own and doesn’t require much intervention from you the user. You can even set Eset Nod32 to not ask for your input, and automatically take care of most security issues. Furthermore, Eset has implemented some new keyboard shortcuts for easy navigation.
Eset Nod32 Antivirus is engineered for speed, and the software didn’t disappoint. Eset has traditionally been one of the few companies that mastered the most advanced scanning technologies but didn’t take a serious performance hit. Eset Nod32 Antivirus maintains utmost security and advanced protection, but not at the expense of your speed or processing power.
In fact, Eset Nod32 has incorporated a specific mode that can be turned on for laptops to optimize performance. This “energy-sipping battery mode” delivers top-notch protection without draining your laptop battery.
Features:
Part of Eset’s strength is found in their comprehensive feature set. Eset Nod32 Antivirus has all the right features (but they haven’t tacked on useless bells and whistles). The features are specifically designed to enhance protection and ease of
use. Current top of the line antivirus software providers like Eset Nod32 have implemented heuristic technology to help catch viruses that are so new traditional signatures haven’t been developed yet. Eset’s refined ThreatSense technology provides proactive protection from malware, protecting you from viruses that would otherwise sneak past solely signature-based solutions.
Eset Nod32 Antivirus is equipped to scan files in real-time, or “on-access” asuse. they are opened or executed. And while this ensures malicious files don’t cause
any problems, it doesn’t mean you have to wait around and wait for Eset before
opening a file. The real-time scan happens almost instantaneously, and happens in the background, so you won’t even know it’s happening.
Another innovative approach that the best security software companies are using is to take advantage of their large community of users and find strength in numbers. Eset’s ThreatSense network gives users quicker protection by having each (participating) user serve as a “watch guard” for other users. When a virus is detected on one PC, Eset is notified immediately to help get protection out to everyone.
Updates:
Eset doesn’t rely solely on virus signatures, but it’s still an essential part of the multi-layered security approach. As such, they have regular updates set to run automatically to keep the signature database current. These updates occur in the background for the most part, because they are often enough and small enough.
Help & Support:
Eset stands by their products with additional help and support as needed. The software is complete with a fairly in-depth product manual, and in-program links to additional support resources. Online you can find answers to questions by searching the product-specific knowledgebase, or from the forum. We also liked that the product manual was available online.
Specific questions can be requested by submitting an issue with their online form, which will be responded to over email or the phone.Summary:
Overall, Eset Nod32 may not be the most popular antivirus software, but their antivirus software is certainly among the best. Eset Nod32 Antivirus 4 delivers comprehensive antivirus protection, with an impressive track record for speed and effectiveness. There are a few better antivirus solutions out there, but you really can’t go wrong with Eset Nod32; a refreshingly simple approach to antivirus.
06.AVG Anti-Virus Review
AVG Anti-Virus 2010 offers a number of compelling features and the right technology to keep your PC protected. As one of the best antivirus software reviewed, AVG offers a great solution that delivers advanced protection and simple use. AVG’s free version is one of the most downloaded files for computer security, but for the most benefit it’s definitely worth paying for the full version (or even upgrading to the complete AVG Internet Security).
Scope of Protection:
AVG Anti-Virus is fully armed to protect your computer from threats from a number of angles. The software includes antivirus and antispyware protection, as well as complete online protection from harmful sites and downloads.
AVG protects from hackers, phishing scams, adware, and malware that comes through email or IM. AVG even scans outbound email to make sure you don’t accidentally pass a virus along to others. And of course the software protects from other forms of malware, including worms, Trojans, and rootkits. One unique feature from this year’s installment from AVG is the cooperation with Identity Guard to offer identity theft protection. If your personal information is compromised, Identity Guard will help you recover and restore your identity (online and off).
Effectiveness:
AVG is a perfectly adequate antivirus solution, and is certainly effective. Their detection rates aren’t as impressive as some of the other antivirus software we reviewed, but the software is by no means ineffective. AV Comparatives awarded AVG the Advanced award in their most recent evaluation, and the software managed nearly 95% detection efficiency. The software “overprotected” multiple times, finding 8 false positives.
A recent test from the Virus Bulletin found AVG to be one of the most effective antivirus software for reactive and proactive virus scanning. In their tests AVG clearly outperformed most of the competition, earning the cumulative score of 80.6%Needless to say, you don’t need to worry about the effectiveness of AVG Anti-Virus.
Ease of Installation:
AVG Anti-Virus is simple to install and setup, but took a bit longer than we would have liked. After the program is installed, you can pretty much sit back and let it do its business.
AVG provides a number of compelling protective measures and security features, and won’t slow you down. AVG Anti-Virus 2010 is faster than last year, and features relatively fast scanning speeds with fairly consistent performance. However, for those looking for the fastest antivirus, you should know that AVG was one of the slower security solutions tested by AV Comparatives, showing only 6.8MB/sec scanning (compared to 17MB/sec from Norton and Avast). That said, AVG for the most part is an install-and-forget security solution if you want it to be. You shouldn’t notice any major lag or slowdown from the software, especially if you schedule the intensive scans to run while the system is otherwise idle.
Ease of Use:
AVG Anti-Virus is straightforward to use and simple to navigate. The interface (nearly identical to last year’s) is streamlined and easy to work with. A well-designed layout and graphical controls are good for beginners and experts alike. One thing that was noticeably missing from the scanning screen was a dynamic status bar (though for the most part scans will be running in the background so you won’t even care). Another element that caught us off guard was the fact that a scan in progress results in two AVG icons appearing in the system tray.
Features:
AVG’s antivirus software is full of great features to help ensure your PC protection. The virus signature database itself is dynamically improved, regularly updated with
the newest signatures. Proactively, AVG Anti-Virus includes advanced heuristics to
detect (and protect from) new viruses that exhibit malware-like behaviors.
Another nice feature is the game mode, which allows you to enjoy games (or movies, presentations, etc) without interruptions or pop-up announcements from AVG. Best of all, your computer is still secure.the newest signatures. Proactively, AVG Anti-Virus includes advanced heuristics to
detect (and protect from) new viruses that exhibit malware-like behaviors.
Only a few of the current antivirus solutions include integrated internet browser link-scanning. AVG’s LinkScanner technology provides a completely new web experience (but don’t worry, it’s fairly unobtrusive, and worth the change).
The AVG toolbar includes a Yahoo! Searchbar, but the Search-Shield provides security ratings for several popular search engines (Google, Yahoo!, Bing). Basically, each result from a search has a small color-coded icon next to it that will let you know if the site is fine (green), bad (red), or should be approached with caution (orange). Hovering over the icon presents you with even more information.
Updates:
Keeping your protection up to date with AVG Anti-Virus is no problem. Regular definition updates are checked for automatically, and can be set to perform every
hour (every 4 hours is the default).
hour (every 4 hours is the default).
Help & Support:
AVG is anxious to help users with any problems they have. In-program help is available with a user manual and links to online help. The online help center has the usual FAQ section and knowledgebase. AVG offers email support, but no phone support. More options are available by paying for Premium support.
Summary:
AVG Anti-Virus is a great antivirus program, and one of the best. The level of protection is certainly what we’ve come to expect from AVG, and the feature set is comprehensive, providing excellent security. AVG is well-worthy of being included in our list of favorite antivirus software.
07.F-Secure Anti-Virus Review
F-Secure Anti-Virus 2010 is another great security solution, and certainly worthy of being included as one of the best antivirus software. F-Secure Anti-Virus is streamlined, fast, and (most importantly) effective. With advanced protection technology and additional integrated security features, F-Secure is a great way to go for desktop antivirus.
Scope of Protection:
F-Secure Anti-Virus is adequately equipped to protect basic users from a variety of computer threats, including viruses, spyware, worms and Trojans. F-Secure can also locate and eliminate deeply entrenched rootkits.
Full protection from online threats (phishing, hackers, identity thieves) is only available with the upgraded F-Secure Internet Security, but the Anti-Virus software includes basic protection from viruses spread through emails, cookies, or malware that attempts to infiltrate your PC registry.Effectiveness:
F-Secure has one of the most effective scanning engines, and third-party test results to prove it. While not the best performer, F-Secure is among the handful of antivirus software that hold the current Advanced A+ rating from AV Comparatives, with an overall detection rate of nearly 98%. The same test found F-Secure Anti-Virus with (relatively few) 4 false positives.
The Virus Bulletin found F-Secure right on par with most of the best antivirus competitors, with a reactive and proactive score of nearly 70. Long story short; F-Secure isn’t technically the most effective, but they’re pretty close to other top antivirus contenders.Ease of Installation:
Taking F-Secure Anti-Virus from start to scanning is impressively straightforward. The installer is configured to automatically remove any other antivirus software you have installed (as they interfere with each other), and is quite quick. F-Secure Anti-Virus was one of the quickest loading antivirus programs we loaded.
F-Secure is a fairly resource-conscious program, and is designed to deliver quality protection without sacrificing resources. In our tests, F-Secure Anti-Virus 2010 was pretty middle of the road, with a respectable idle footprint (how much memory the software takes when it’s not really doing anything). We were, however, pleasantly surprised by the very efficient scan footprint (memory used while scanning). While it wasn’t as low as some, it was significantly lower than several antivirus solutions.Ease of Use:
Anti-Virus 2010 from F-Secure is a fairly straightforward program. The user interface accommodates simple navigation and makes it easy to schedule specific scans or adjust settings. The main dashboard features quick access to the essentials (scan, update, statistics), and is visually striking with the use of transparency.
Most of the time you won’t even have F-Secure open since the updates and scans run automatically. The easy-to-understand icon in the lower-right taskbar will help you comprehend the status of your security.Features:
One impressive feature from F-Secure is their innovative protection network. DeepGuard 2.0 utilizes “cloud security” in the form of a speedy internet-hosted database of security information. Basically, when you open a program or application on your PC, F-Secure checks with the DeepGuard network for any insights, known problems, or validation. If a program doesn’t make the grade, every other F-Secure user is protected from the same threat within 60 seconds. Best of all, this intensive security check happens in real-time and won’t even be noticed in everyday computing.
F-Secure Anti-Virus 2010 also incorporates advanced heuristics. The proactive protection for “zero-hour” threat catching is a HIPS (host-based intrusion prevention system) that works behind-the-scenes to find malware-like activity through monitoring file behavior and sandbox analysis. Basically, F-Secure is looking out for hidden malware that goes undetected by the current virus signatures. All files accessed/opened on your computer are scanned by F-Secure’s on-access scanning. Anti-Virus 2010 is also equipped to run regular antivirus scans automatically, but you can always perform a manual scan from the program. Furthermore, if you want to scan a specific file or folder, simply right-click on it and scan it immediately.
F-Secure can scan compressed files and files on removable drives. You can configure the software to clean the files (if possible) automatically, or they will be placed in the quarantine. The quarantine is where potentially dangerous files are kept where they can’t cause damage until you decide what action (restore, delete) to take.
Updates:
Updates are scheduled by default with F-Secure to renew (if needed) every 2 hours, completely automatically and in the background. And as mentioned earlier, with the proactive DeepGuard Network, users are updated and protected from newfound threats within 60 seconds.
Business users and others should have no problem staying on top of updates; F-Secure is able to update with a proxy server.Help & Support:
F-Secure has a number of useful resources available online for additional product support. You can contact 24/7 on the phone, or submit an email request. Online they feature several help articles and a knowledgebase. Direct in-product help is in the form of a user manual.
Summary:
F-Secure Anti-Virus 2010 is another great antivirus software. Delivering excellence in technology and implementation, F-Secure is a solid solution. Complete with proactive protection, cloud security and simple usability, F-Secure Anti-Virus is a compelling piece of software, and should more than do the trick for basic home desktop antivirus needs. For more advanced and complete internet protection (link scanner, active blocking, safety warnings), consider F-Secure Internet Security, or one of our higher rated antivirus software.
08.G DATA AntiVirus Review
With over 20 years in the antivirus manufacturing business and continued growth, G DATA is one of the best in the industry, and it shows with their simple and valuable security software. G DATA AntiVirus continues the trend, delivering a high level of security and an easy-to-use product. With their new version, they have simplified the interface and put it all in the same window. You don't have to go searching for this program's features anymore.
Scope of Protection:
G DATA’s AntiVirus software isn’t a full internet security suite, but it comes pretty close with comprehensive protection. Antivirus and antispyware protection are combined with complete web protection. G DATA is equipped and armed to protect your computer from any number of threats (online or off), including phishing scams, dialers, adware, malicious scripts, Trojans, rootkits, worms and more.
G DATA AntiVirus also incorporates advanced protection from malware spread through email or IM. The software goes as far as scanning outbound email(messages you send) for viruses and other malware.
Effectiveness:
G DATA’s protection level is second to none, delivering consistent maximum protection. One way they do this is by utilizing two distinct virus scanners (don’t worry, you still won’t notice any slowdown).
AntiVirus from G DATA continues to perform remarkably well with third party testers. AV Comparatives found the software to be in tip-top shape. While the software wasn’t the fastest, the 9.3MB/sec scanning speed was more than adequate, and G DATA came away with the highest total detection rate: an almost perfect score of 99.8%. (Needless to say, the software came away with the coveted Advanced A+ certification)Virus Bulletin also found G DATA’s Antivirus solution more than adequate, and certified the software with the VB 100%.
G DATA has outperformed most if not all other antivirus programs. The general consensus is that while G DATA might be a bit slower (keyword being bit) than some, it is certainly one of the most thorough and effective at detecting and removing viruses and malware. And when it comes right down to it, isn’t that the most important?
Ease of Installation:
The whole installation process took under 10 minutes, and only required 1 restart. All things considered, G DATA Antivirus was straightforward to download and install.
While you can simply install the software and forget about it, additional setup is pretty quick and will help you schedule scans and customize settings.G DATA Antivirus uses two scanning engines, but certainly doesn’t take twice as
long as other security software. In fact, G DATA is actually fairly fast and resource efficient. Our tests clocked the software using 10.7MB on idle, and 12.4MB while running a scan. While it’s not the most efficient with your system resources, it
certainly is better than most antivirus software (and shouldn’t cause any system heartburn).
Ease of Use:
G DATA’s antivirus software is remarkably simple to not only implement, but use. Advanced users or the overly cautious type should have no problem manually using the program and monitoring performance. More importantly, beginners and users who just need the software to work without much intervention will also have no trouble simply letting G DATA run in the background.
Features:
G DATA Antivirus comes equipped with all the essential tools to keep your computer safe. And while it doesn’t have some of the additional features that add convenience (silent gamer mode, password protected settings, laptop battery mode), the software has a healthy dose of extra features.
One feature that can’t be overstated is G DATA’s unique integration of 2 separate scanning engines. Running an antivirus scan using both engines increases efficacy, and won’t considerably slow you down. And while there is plenty of overlap with 2 scanning engines, the virus signature database is the heart of any security software (and getting two for the price of one is great).Another impressive feature is the self-learning fingerprinting and whitelisting. Basically, G DATA is able to automatically analyze files and determine if they pose a threat (or will in the future).
Updates:
Especially good for the set-and-forget user, updates are performed automatically, and in the background. Both virus signature definitions and actual program updates will run automatically, or can be updated manually.
Regular updates are performed every hour, and are small enough that they won’t affect regular computer use. If you’re using G DATA at work, you can easily setup the software to update with your proxy server.Help & Support:
G DATA Antivirus has the typical in-program help files and traditional help (searchable support section and online support form). They also have an emergency phone line for immediate assistance. Noticeably missing from the support lineup was the ability to chat with support online, or a support forum.
Summary:
Overall, G DATA Antivirus is one of the best desktop antivirus solutions available on the market. We can confidently recommend the software as one of the most effective and resource-friendly antivirus software. For more advanced protection, consider upgrading to G DATA Total Security, or compare G DATA with our other reviewed antivirus products.
